“Best of all is “River of Song” (2002), an ecological song cycle based on award-winning poems by children and commissioned by mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. The six songs (the last is a jazzy setting of an e.e. cummings poem) are the work of a composer with a real flair for lyrical melody–a 21st Century Lenny Bernstein. The delicate scoring allows the words and images to waft through the textures. It’s an utterly charming cycle, sung here with great sensitivity by Von Stade with soprano Rachel Luxon.”
