Bob Bernstein - UM '70-'71 Jazz Band

April 30, 2010

Chris - I greatly enjoyed the Dave Brubeck Quintet during the second half of last night's concert at Stamford's Palace Theatre. It was a pleasure to see and hear you join the Quartet with your superb trombone. The whole concert was an inspirational work of art. It must be incredibly fulfilling to have so many years of continuing music making with your Dad. I loved hearing his piano voicings last night and listening to his remarks and seeing his excitement at the drummer's thrilling solo on Take Five. It makes me want to play that great composition tomorrow with my Friday lunchtime jazz band (made up mostly of lawyers who are also dedicated amateur musicians -- i still play alto and soprano although far less frequently than I'd like). i hope you will put me on your mailing list so that I can come hear your group when you will be playing in the area (including Fairfield or Westchester or NYC). All best wishes. Bob Bernstein.

My wife and I attended the premier of Travels in Time for Three with the Youngstown Symphony tonight. WOW! The Time for Three musicians were rock'in. You're comment that the peice is a musical thrill ride was right on. After listening to you join in on their Philly Phunk song, it would be great if you and the group could join the YSU Dana School of Music Jazz ensambles for one of their concerts.

Thanks for a great evening.

My husband wrote you in 1997 regarding your wonderful song, "Across Your Dreams". You so kindly sent us a copy. In 2007 my husband died (Dr. Wm. Soderberg). About 3 weeks ago, I awoke in the middle of the night singing "Across Your Dreams", which I hadn't sung in years. I searched for other songs you have written in order to buy some sheet music and I cannot find them. I would love to sing so many on Frederica von Stade's CD. They mean much to me and would love to sing them. How might I buy them? You are amazing. Thank you for your wonderful songs. Sherry Johnson

My girlfriend and I heard your Adams piece last night in Baltimore, and chatted with you briefly at the restaurant accross the street. We loved the performance and the nuance of the music and the visual juxtapositions with the
Adams shots! Wow---can't wait to hear it again! Keep up the good (multimedia) work!

Just came home from seeing you and hearing the BSO play Ansel Adams: America. I just loved it. I wanted to download the piece or purchase it, but I can't seem to find it listed anywhere? Have you recorded this terrific work? Is it available? Please advise. Congratulations

Hey Chris,

It's great to catch up on all your doings since our high school days!! Keep up the great work! I was delighted to see the Kennedy Center honor your dad on his birthday the other night -- and see you and your brothers play for him (and all of us!)!!

Hi Chris,
I was thinking about your great performance on 40 Days from the Cut Above direct to Disc lp. I am too lazy to transfer this lp to my hard drive. Will it ever be released as a cd? I saw your brother Matt downtown Guelph a few weeks ago, man is he ever tall. Have you guys thought about doing any more 2 (3) generations of Brubeck collaborations?
Regards,
Mark

Hi,Chris!
I saw you yesterday on Jô Soares program and I´m still very impressed with your performance. By the way, what´s the name of that tune? Man, you´re the best BlueJazz musician I´d ever heard! I´ve got beautiful leggatos, nice vibratos and a remarkable way in playing the Blues!
Parabéns!

Hi Chris
I came across a photo of you that was taken in Wailuku on Maui circa 1974. You were touring with your dad & brothers. We visited with you all backstage as my uncle Dave van Kriedt played with your dad. Send me an email if you'd like to see the photos.
Cheers

Incidentally, if you dig through the web site www.aikenperformingartsgroup.org you will find reprints of some of the local articles about the campaign - some from national news services. Its amazing how far a good idea will travel if good people do something about it.

The volunteers here in Aiken have done just that.

Best,

Hi Chris:
I am sure you will be delighted to learn that we followed up on your suggestion and created a campaign called "Instruments in Your Attic". So far Aiken Performing Arts Group has collected more that 100 used band instruments, 6 pianos, an organ, - everything from banjos to flutes - and even a 100 year old metal clarinet. The community has pitched in and we are now trying to raise money to repair those that need it for distribution into the public schools of this county. There is no money in the County school budget for musical instruments. The instruments will become the property of the school system to be lent to young people. Included in the program is also the fledgling band program at the University of South Carolina Aiken and a new multi racial charter school. We feel great about what is happening as well you should. There are a lot of poor kids here in Aiken County who will have the opportunity to perform. All the best, Tom Hofstetter

Heard you play in Bemidji, MN - just loved it. Did not know I liked jazz until I heard Triple Play! I am trying to find a recording of the EXQUISITE piece played with the orchestra; unfortunately, I do not remember the title, but it is the classical piece used in the G.E. light bulb commercials a few years ago. I was nearly moved to tears when I heard it and would love to add it to my music collection. Thanks!

Hi Chris, It's Helen's son. Your father will be playing in NYC on June 15th just a few blocks from my home so I will be hearing his music for the first time. Was writing to see if you'd happen to be in town with him so I could say hello. Best,
